In which industries are fused zirconia generally used?

Ⅰ.Application in Ceramic Color Glaze

Ceramic pigment is an important ceramic decorative material. Among ceramic pigments, zirconium base material has the characteristics of good color stability, strong color strength, good miscibility and pure color. Therefore, fused zirconia is more and more widely used in the production of ceramic color glaze. Zirconium-based ceramic pigments mainly include zirconium vanadium blue, zirconium praseodymium yellow, vanadium zirconium yellow, zirconium iron red, zirconium yellow and so on. In the process of synthesizing zirconium silicate, transition metal and rare earth metal ions can enter its crystal lattice to form bright and stable toner.

Ⅱ.Refractory and Casting

Zirconia has two main refractory markets. One is continuous cast steel refractories, especially isostatic pressing products. These products include liquid outlets and submerged nozzles for tundish and ladle. Zirconia is also used for sliding baffles, especially in the central area exposed to higher temperatures. Partially stabilized calcium oxide and magnesium oxide zirconium dioxide are both used, however, calcium oxide is usually cheaper. Another major market is the production of fused alumina-zirconia-silica (AZS) refractories for glass industry. Zirconia provides high temperature resistance and corrosion resistance for molten glass. Because there is no reaction zone, there will be no broken stone in the glass.

Ⅲ. Investment casting

For zirconia, this is another major dedicated market. In the casting of special products, such as aerospace engines, zirconia is used as the coating of the model. The products included here include turbine blades and golf clubs. Zirconite is used in investment casting because it can form actual contact with hot metal alloy, thus protecting the mold from thermal shock.
